Give me a good movie to watch?
It can be scary (I love those, less gory)
I love movies like empire records, Dazed and Confused, Lost Boys, Stand By Me, Fight Club, Tim Burton films so on.
I love 80’s movies (seen all of the breakfast club types)
I love independent films (Virgin Suicides, Donny Darko)
I love horror flicks, and funny 90’s flicks…and yes Double Dragons.

Plan 9 from Outer Space.

It’s a 1958 horror movie, but it’s made so terribly that it quickly became the funniest movie I’ve EVER seen. Even the opening credits have two names that make me laugh.

Ravenous

Pretty weird black comedy/thriller where the people eat each other. Doesn’t have the art element as Burton, but has a really raw feel and it’s about eating people without the singing.

Moving from America to Italy?
I have been thinking about moving to Italy for a while now. I currently reside in SLC, UT. I am 29 years old and i have no college education. To learn Italian would not be to difficult for me. So my question to you guys is:

a) How hard is it to get citizenship? The process, requirements, the length of process.
b) Is the cost of living there expensive or is it just in certain regions and where?
c) Since i am not a native to the country would i be looked down on, would it be hard for me to get a decent job? Similar; sad to say how a lot of foreigners are treated in the US.
d) How are the people there? Friendly or snobbish?
e) How is the pace of life there fast or more slow paced?
f) I am content on living in something that will get me by i do not need a big house or fancy car. I am simple man and simple things please me. So which places should i shoot to move to?
g) What good books should i read to get to know Italy better?

Thanks for your time,
Joe

Joe, I am jealous. If I could choose one place in the world to live, it would be some place in Tuscany, around Florence. I don’t know the answers to all your questions, so I’ll answer just the ones I know:

b. cost of living is comparable to US, cities more expensive than the countryside
c. you would NOT be looked down on, Europeans are VERY tolerant; as for jobs, it depends on your luck. here’s a website that has some good information: http://www.livinginitaly.com/working.htm
d. people are FRIENDLY, friendly, friendly; if you are a social type of person, you will LOVE Italy
e. pace of life – so-so, neither too fast, nor too slow

For the rest of your questions, Google is your friend ;)

Good luck and let me tell you again, I am SO jealous!

PS: You could make decent money teaching English as a second language, but for that you need to get a certificate in the US, which I think takes like 3 months. Look into it.
Suntio | Feb 05, 2010

a) You don’t need to get citizenship to move here. Qualifying for citizenship is a very long process unless you have Italian heritage or marry an Italian.

b) The cost of living here is higher than in the US. My one bedroom apartment here costs about the same monthly as my 4 bedroom home in Colorado, but I have no land or air-conditioning here. Fuel costs for the car are much more expensive.

c) See below regarding jobs. You wouldn’t be looked down on, but jobs are not easy to find. You can’t just show up and start looking for a job.

d) The people here are terrific – very friendly and helpful in my experience (ten years living here).

e) Slower paced than you might be used to in some respects, but it can depend on where you are.

f) Moving here is difficult at best – you need to find work first and move where you can work. Come for a visit as a tourist and find places that appeal to you. However, see below.

g) Beppe Severgnini – Ciao America (his experiences moving to America will give you an idea of what the differences are); there are lots of other possibilities.

This generally isn’t easy to do.
The following applies to non-EU citizens who want to work in the EU in general and Italy in particular, for example.

EU citizens have the right to live and work within the EU, but others need a visa to live and work here legally. You can’t just decide to relocate and go. The site for visas here in Italy is: http://www.esteri.it/visti/index_eng.asp . The site has links to the application, the additional information you need to supply in order to get the visa and where to apply.

The rules in much of the EU have been harmonized and will be similar; there really aren’t many easier places. You cannot apply for the visa from Italy; you need to do that before you arrive. When you get here, you will have to apply for a Permesso di Soggiorno (Permission to Stay) from the authorities. With the economy now, jobs are scarce – a lot of companies have a hiring freeze in place. The unemployment rate in Spain is around 20% for example and almost 50% in the 16 to 24 year old age group; it’s not that bad here, but still higher than the US.

A work permit is separate – you cannot apply for that yourself. The company has to apply and they have to be able to demonstrate that there is not a viable EU candidate for the job. As a result, jobs for foreigners including Canadian or US citizens are pretty much restricted to people with special education, knowledge, or experience. The medical/healthcare field may have the most demand right now. You will need to know the local language where ever you would move. I’m not aware of anyone who is hiring currently in the city where I live and some business are cutting back on employees.

When I applied for a visa several years ago, the process took about 8 months even though it was just of transfer of the job I was already doing from the US to Italy. Actually getting the visa after the paperwork was in place was pretty quick though (about a week). One option might be to work with an international company that has offices both there and here where you might be able to transfer, who represents you now? Do they have contacts in the UK or rest of Europe that might be able to use you?

It’s useful to check the expat sites for information about living and working here or other places you might be interested in:

My Cat Has A Strange Circle on her Skin.?
My cat Princess is 3yrs old, She had worms about 6-7 weeks ago (they were like a grain of rice). She had a shot for that & then another 2weeks later.
Earlier today i was petting her and noticed something diffrent, there was a circle the size of a quarter maybe a little smaller. Then there was a little patch of hair in the middle of that butt it looked like there was a scab underneath the hair so i lightly pulled it and it came off. Now there is just a little circle with no hair with a little scab in the middle in the shape of a cirlce. Im taking her to the vet tomarrow butt im worried no knowing what it may be. I took a little video of it butt there is no way of uploading it here. Thank’s For Your Help.
My friend was a vet tech butt not too experienced and says it isnt Ring Worm cuz the skin isnt red and has no bumps. It must be something else.

It’s ringworm. That stuff is notorious for NOT following the rules. Our cat had no bumps and no ring, but the culture came back positive for ringworm.

At least it’s easy to treat. Miconazole, a 2% solution (you can get that from any pharmacy, it works on humans too and it’s 1/3 the cost of the vet’s tube of Miconazole).

If you want to be sure, have the vet do a culture. If you want to start treating, buy an $8 tube of Miconazole and apply three times a day. Do NOT scrub at the area, it spreads the spores and makes things worse. Just dab it.

Elaine M | Feb 08, 2010

take your cat to a vet
Hagid | Feb 07, 2010

What it most likely is, is a ring worm. Humans can get them too, they really aren’t that big of a deal. Your vet wil give him/her an antibiotic which will kill the worm. Ringworms are harmless so no worries. Hope I could help, best of luck
xPIERCEDPUNKx | Feb 07, 2010

Sounds like ring worm. Wash your hands after you touch her and keep her secluded in a bathroom or something until you get to the vet and find out exactly what it is.
Infiniti | Feb 07, 2010

It may be ringworm, which is not really a worm at all but is a fungal infection. Show it to the vet and he/she will be able diagnose it. Ringworm is contagious and you can catch it from your cat. Don’t touch the ringworm and if you have wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water. If you think you have picked up the fungus, see your doctor.
ejm | Feb 07, 2010

Ringworm – it is VERY contagious to you and difficult to cure. Take your cat to the vet asap.

They don’t give shots for worms. That is a pill and only one. The shot was for something else (sounds like a vaccination) so you should make sure your cat was actually wormed. It’s a good idea to keep a notebook with information about what happens at the vet and take notes while you’re there so you are aware of what’s gone on there.

There are no end of reasons to keep cats indoors. Sounds like you’re finding lots of them.
laurel p | Feb 08, 2010

Definately ringworm.
Karen | Feb 08, 2010

sounds like ringworm, humans can catch it,I rescue cats and if I get one in that has ringworm my husband always gets it but don’t freak out its not like lice or anything its very easy to cure with some anti fungal cream. just wash your hands after you pet the kitty and do take her to the vet to be sure what it is.(and its not actually a worm) go google it

Is anybody else completely over it?
Hey ladies. I’m 38 weeks 4 days. I’m so ready to have my baby boy here. I’m hoping for him to come just a little bit early because my mother in law is coming out just a few days after my due date for a couple of weeks to see the baby and my husband because my husband is deploying to Iraq for 1 year the end of March. So I’m also hoping he’ll decided to come a little bit early so my husband has more time to spend with him. My doctor said he will have no problem inducing me just a couple of days after my due date if my baby hasn’t come by then because I don’t want to go too far over with my husband leaving.

I just thought I’d get on here and vent a little bit.. The end of pregnancy is definitely not fun. I keep getting all kinds of period like cramps and discharge and every time I’m hoping maybe its the the start of something.. But its not haha. I’m just sick of my back hurting and my pelvic bone hurting so bad. And not to mention the not being able to breath very well, constant heartburn, feeling hot all the time, the mix of fatigue and energy spurts.. I can’t wait to have my baby here and to be able to get my body back!

How is everybody feeling? Are you close to being due?

Good luck to everyone with the rest of their pregnancies!

I am only 25 weeks and so ready for these prenatal visits and this pregnancy to be over with. Every time I look at my baby’s diapers or bottles that I already have for him/her I get so anxious to want to have my baby so I can hold, kiss, spoil and love him/or her. I know how you must be feeling at 38 weeks but you only have about maybe 2 wks to go. Good Luck.

Si, I am. :D My list of books hasn’t changed from the last time you did a question like this, so I won’t re-post it.

Good selection. I was just turned on to the Pendergast series by Preston & Child a few months ago.

Based on your list, try Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books. They’re satirical fantasy at it’s best.

Wait, the Cat in the Hat counts?

I could’ve been using it all this time…

I’ve read alot of those.
Crap, that actually surprised me.
Did you read Edgar Rice Burroughs, Dame Agatha Christie, Robert Louis Stevenson, that lady who writes about the siamese cat?
I’ve read a pile of Sci-fi that would make you sick.
all of Louis L’Amour and Zane Grey too
The entire collection of plays and poems by Bill Shakespeare as well. (That took quite a bit) and some early English epic poems by Chaucer (the Green Knight)

I’ve upwards of 150 books spanning several genres(I really don’t want to list them all).

I can tell you are!
I own hundreds and hundreds of books, many of which I really like, so I’m also a bibliophile!
It helps I suppose because I want to be a fiction writer.
